An online survey is now available allowing Rocky Mountain House residents to have their say on a potential new disc golf course in town— including their preferred location.
Two locations have been identified: one near West Central High School and another in Riverview/ River Flats Park near the north end. Both locations have been identified as ideal as a potential course that can weave through natural landscapes, and can accommodate 18-hole tournament play.
Other survey questions pertain to how often residents engage in outdoor activities, as well as how important factors such as natural beauty and access to amenities are to a disc golf location.
The online survey follows a public information session held Jan. 29 at the Lou Soppit Community Centre. During the open house, a group of residents were given information on disc golf, including its accessibility to wide range of people, and high benefit to cost ratio.
As well, benefits of both proposed locations were presented.
For example, the Riverview Park area has abundant access to on-street parking and has an ideal landscape for tournament play, while the West Central location is close to restroom facilities at Helen Hunley Park and is on underutilized land.

Additionally, attendees were assured that the Town of Rocky Mountain House course will be free to play. While they would have to provide their own equipment, it’s generally inexpensive – with discs designed for golf generally selling for $10 to $20 each.
The presentation also says disc golf is an environmentally-friendly sport. Unlike traditional golf, a disc golf course weaves its way through the natural landscape through grass, fields and forest. It says the impact of a disc golf course on flora and fauna is minimal.
