A year-old proposal to lobby Canada Post to put up Canada Post super boxes in the east industrial area of Rocky Mountain House has been abandoned by town council.
Council decided underwhelming results from a Jan. 2025 survey of area business was insufficient to continue to lobby Canada Post, and the matter was scrapped.
The proposal first introduced by Coun. Dale Shippelt in March 2024, sought to address a perceived lack of mail service east of Highway 11, as many areas businesses had to travel to the post office to pick up their mail.
Throughout 2024, early efforts included contacting Canada Post and writing MP Gerald Soroka about the concerns. Eventually, the town resolved to draft a survey, which was hand-delivered to around 100 businesses in the area.
During the March 11, 2025 governance and priorities committee meeting, the results were revealed which showed paltry results. Of the 100 surveys sent out, 21 were returned, with 13 indicating they were content with mail services, eight said there was room for improvement, with only four of which indicating they were wanting super boxes installed.
Acting Mayor Len Phillips says he was disappointed with the low number of responses, with Coun. Ken Moesker saying the low turnout indicated new super boxes are “not a priority.”
Coun. Dale Shippelt says he continues to hear concerns from businesses, and opines there is a “disconnect” between the survey results and sentiment on the ground.
An e-mailed statement from a town spokesperson says council will no longer ask Canada Post to reconsider its service in the industrial area.
