Students across Alberta — including those from West Central High School, Pioneer School, Condor School and David Thompson High School — cast their ballots in a national student vote held ahead of the federal election, and the results show young voters would have picked Conservative candidate William Stevenson by a wide margin.
In the student simulation, Stevenson secured just over 56 per cent of the vote locally, while Liberal candidate Michael Fark came in second with a little over 21 per cent.
Nationwide, more than 900,000 students from Grades 4 to 12 participated in the Student Vote program over the past week. The mock election projected a Conservative minority government, with the party winning 165 seats and 36 per cent of the popular vote.
The Liberals followed closely behind with 145 seats and 31 per cent of the vote. The Bloc Québécois would have claimed 18 seats with 2.1 per cent of the popular vote, while the NDP, despite earning 14 per cent support, would have ended up with just 13 seats.
In Alberta, students from 1,139 schools across 37 ridings took part.
While these results don’t count toward the actual election — students under 18 aren’t eligible to vote — the program offers a glimpse into the political leanings of Canada’s youth.
Unofficial results from Elections Canada for the actual election showed Stevenson winning by an even wider margin, with a little over 70 per cent of the vote. Fark trailed at around 25 per cent.
