The Rocky Sundevils U15C fastball team is headed back to Leduc this weekend as the provincial championships get a second chance following a rainout last week.
The team, made up of players from Rocky Mountain House, Leslieville, Bentley and Rimbey, had already opened the tournament with two wins before weather forced a postponement.
“We beat Fort Saskatchewan by one and then Calgary by five,” said coach Clint Rolfsen. “We were sitting in the top four when the rain hit.”
The tournament, which originally featured 10 teams from across Alberta, was paused due to heavy rain and poor field conditions. Organizers are now aiming to resume play this weekend in Leduc, pending weather and umpire availability.
The Sundevils earned their provincial berth earlier this month by advancing through a Central Alberta zone qualifier, where they beat Sylvan Lake twice and lost to Camrose.
The team is part of the Central Alberta Softball League (CASL) and has seen strong development since Rocky revived its fastball program last year. This season, the U15C team was the only Rocky-based squad to qualify for provincials.

Currently, the Sundevils roster features 11 players, including two recent additions brought in to replace an injured player and an overage teammate.
“You have to pick up players who are already registered with Softball Alberta,” Rolfsen explained. “You can’t just [recruit] anybody.”
The team hopes to finish what they started when tournament play resumes this weekend.
“People are ready to move on with their summers,” Rolfsen said. “So hopefully we get it done.”
