The hamlet of Nordegg is preparing to welcome visitors for its annual Nordegg Days celebration later this month, with two full days of markets, demonstrations, music, and plenty of food on Saturday, Aug. 30 and Sunday, Aug. 31.
Organized by the Nordegg Community Association, the event continues to grow each year and is expected to attract thousands to the foothills community, which has been hosting Nordegg Days since 2016.
“This little town puts on an amazing event,” said Florrie Huckle, treasurer of the Community Association. “Last year we had around 2,500 people come through the market on Saturday alone, so it’s definitely become a big draw.”
Returning this year is the Mountains and Mines Market, running both days, featuring a wide variety of vendors, handmade goods, and local produce. Also back is the Western Wheels Car Club, which will host its annual show and shine on Saturday.
Throughout the weekend, visitors can expect demonstrations, hands-on activities, and a few unique surprises.
Among the more popular features is the Viking wood splitting demonstration, a returning crowd-pleaser.
“He’ll be there again this year,” said Huckle. “And we’ve got other fun events like blacksmith demos, workshops, and a raffle with some amazing prizes — including forged knives and even a sword from the Viking wood splitter.”
Live music will take over the community hall on Sunday afternoon and evening, with local performers and buskers, as well as a headline performance by Paeton Cameron during the evening beer gardens.
“It’ll be a jam-packed day at the hall,” said Huckle. “We’ve got Paeton Cameron as our headliner, and earlier in the afternoon a group of locals called the ‘Coalplay’ —it’s kind of a play on words for our mining history— will be jamming for a couple hours.”
The evening will also include the Harvest Fall Supper, which begins at 5 p.m. at the community hall. Supper is free, though registration is required in advance, and donations are welcome.
Huckle also noted that the Community Association is holding a 50/50 fundraiser throughout the weekend to support the construction of a new community hall in the coming years.
