The 2025/2026 school year is beginning with a seed of uncertainty, as kids head back to class despite the possibility of a teachers strike.
Wild Rose School Division (WRSD) students are scheduled to head back Sept. 2.
A WRSD spokesperson told 94.5 Rewind Radio that there will be no change in plan from the Sept. 2 start date until it hears otherwise from the results of the negotiations.
Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools (RDCRS) heads back to class even sooner.
Grade 9 students headed back to class on Aug. 28, while all students also return before the long weekend, Aug. 29.
Similarly, a spokesperson from RDCRS says classes are going ahead as scheduled, and parents will be informed immediately if there’s any change.
They add RDCRS remains “hopeful” a deal can be reached.
Teachers voted in June for strike action and the two sides have until the end of the week to reach an agreement. If that doesn’t happen, the union says an Alberta-wide strike is possible.
