West Country youth ages 12-18 are invited to sign up to be a member of the 198 Yukon Sea Cadets Corps, at an event Sept. 10.
The group meets in the basement of the Royal Canadian Legion every Wednesday from 6:30-9 p.m. where youth learn skills such as seamanship, knot-tying, marksmanship, and outdoor adventure training.
The Royal Canadian Sea Cadet program is offered free to youth in Canada from coast to coast, and includes events outside Wednesday gatherings including sailing weekends.
Kris Skeels with the club says kids get out to volunteer with local clubs like the Rocky Kinsmen, Rocky Lions Club, the rodeo association, and both Rocky and Caroline legions— gaining skills and building character in the process.
“[Youth learn] nautical and marine knowledge like knot tying,” says Skeels. “There’s sail camps. We do outdoor survival education and orienteering. We participate in marksmanship and drill competitions.”
