A 33-year-old man is facing multiple charges after RCMP say he was spotted walking near a local school in Sundre with a loaded shotgun, prompting a lockdown and shelter-in-place order Friday morning.
Sundre RCMP say they responded to a 911 call reporting a man with a 12-gauge shotgun in the vicinity of a school. As a precaution, area schools were placed in lockdown and a shelter-in-place alert was issued to the community.
Officers from Sundre, Didsbury and Olds detachments, along with Police Dog Services, were called in to assist. A tip led RCMP to a residence on 4 Street, where police set up containment and attempted to locate the suspect.
At around 9:15 a.m., the suspect exited the home and surrendered to police without incident.
A search warrant was later executed at the residence, resulting in the seizure of four firearms stored in a safe, one unsecured loaded shotgun, drug trafficking paraphernalia and methamphetamine.
Jason Kelly Burns, of Mountain View County, has been charged with assault, two counts of uttering threats, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.
He was remanded into custody following a judicial hearing and is scheduled to appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Didsbury on Sept. 29.
