A new wildfire has been detected southwest of Peppers Lake as fire danger rises to high in the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area.
Alberta Wildfire officials say the blaze, designated RWF080, was discovered Oct. 23 and is estimated at 80 hectares. It’s classified as out of control about 11 kilometres southwest of the Peppers Lake Provincial Recreation Area. Authorities say the fire is not threatening any communities or infrastructure at this time.
Officials say warm, windy weather and dry vegetation are driving the increased fire danger, which will remain high until the area receives sustained rainfall.
The high designation marks an increase from the moderate danger level issued Oct. 21.
A fire advisory remains in effect for the town of Rocky Mountain House and the surrounding Forest Protection Area. Existing fire permits are still valid, but extensions may not be approved. Safe campfires are still allowed under the advisory.
As of Oct. 23, there are no fire restrictions in place for Clearwater County, east of Rocky Mountain House.
