Rocky Mountain House has been named one of WorldAtlas‘ ‘7 Nicest Small Towns in Alberta’.
Joining Rocky in recognition are the towns of Jasper, Drumheller, Canmore, Waterton, Sylvan Lake and Fort McLeod.
The article lauds Rocky’s rich background concerning fur trading posts established in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, whose rich history is preserved in “reconstructed forts, interpretive trails, and archaeological exhibits that shine light on early European and Indigenous trade networks.”
The article celebrates other local attractions including easy access to local trailheads, fishing holes, and campgrounds along the David Thompson Highway.
Crimson Lake Provincial Park also received a mention for its “network of lakeside trails and campsites, while the Clearwater and North Saskatchewan Rivers attract paddlers and anglers looking to get out and explore on the water.”
Abraham Lake, with its “impossibly blue waters”, was also highlighted as a must-see attraction.
Montréal-based WorldAtlas maintains a free, online atlas, but also features articles highlighting global destinations including ‘8 Snake Infested Lakes in Florida’, and ‘8 Scenic Road Trip Stops along US-101’.
Vancouver-based Daily Hive also picked up on the recognition, further adding that while Jasper and Banff often receive a lot of attention, Rocky Mountain House is full of charms itself.
Nearby Sylvan Lake was described as a “seemingly out-of-place resort town in the prairies, known for its clear waters and focus on family-friendly recreation.”
The article also celebrates Sylvan Lake’s waterfront area which includes a mix of restaurants, small shops, and seasonal markets that “cater to both residents and visitors”.
It’s the third time in the last year that the Rocky Mountain House area has received favorable attention from an outside publication.
In 2024, NarCity Calgary named the town as one of the ‘6 Charming Small Towns with a Cheaper Cost of Living Than Calgary.’
More recently, the Rocky Mountain House National Historic Site was featured in a National Geographic’s ‘Ten National Parks in Canada you need to visit’.
