Rocky’s Community Events Committee has organized a day of free activities for Family Day in Rocky Mountain House.
Weather permitting, activities will be held outdoors at the Curtis Field oval. Planned events include a skating disco around the oval, Winter Olympics-themed mini-games, a chili cookoff and more.
Last year’s inaugural event was forced indoors due to frigid temperatures. Organizers say a backup plan is once again in place, with activities moving to the Rocky Mountain House Recreation Centre if cold weather persists.
The committee is also hoping to boost participation in the chili cookoff this year and plans to help offset costs. Committee chair Tina Hutchinson says only two participants signed up last year.
To encourage more entries, the committee will provide up to eight participants with $100 in Chamber Bucks to help cover the cost of ingredients.
“As prices and food costs go up, we want to help cover the cost and maybe attract more people,” Hutchinson says.
The deadline to register is Feb. 13. Participants and volunteers can register by emailing events@trmh.ca. The winning chili recipe will receive a prize.
Organizers are also planning to build on excitement surrounding the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, which will be in full swing by Family Day.
Depending on snow conditions, Hutchinson says there will be Olympics-themed games such as a snowman build, snowman throw and obstacle course. Traditional family-friendly activities, including tug-of-war and giant Jenga, will also be available.
Families can warm up by the fire and enjoy hot chocolate and cookies.
Hutchinson encourages residents to check out Crimson Lake Winterfest, scheduled two days before Family Day. However, she says the local Family Day event may be a good option for those who find it difficult to travel to Crimson Lake.
