With roof repairs complete at the Rocky Curling Club, organizers are moving full steam ahead with a shortened curling season that includes the return of the Farmers’ and Farmerettes’ Bonspiels, set for Jan. 26 to 31.
Organizers say 24 teams have signed up for the popular get-together of West Country producers.
The Farmers’ Bonspiel dates back to 1986 and was started by local businesses as a way to show appreciation for the farming community.
Thanks to the support of more than 50 corporate sponsors, committee member Gary Donald said there is once again no cost for teams to enter. Sponsorship also covers prizes, including the longstanding “bacon and beans” tradition for the two teams that do not make the finals.
The public is welcome to come out and cheer on the teams. Donald added there will also be a free pancake breakfast at the curling club Thursday and Friday mornings from 8 to 11 a.m.
Over its nearly 40-year history, Donald said the event has changed.
“There are fewer and fewer farmers curling now,” he said. “We’re encouraging at least one farmer per team.”
The first draw for the Farmerettes’ Bonspiel begins Monday, Jan. 26, and runs through Jan. 28. The Farmers’ Bonspiel starts Wednesday, Jan. 28, and continues through Jan. 31.
Donald also extended his gratitude to local sponsors and said organizers hope to see members of the public come out to support the curlers.
