The wildfire danger in the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area is now rated very high following a May 2 grass fire east of Dovercourt Hall.
The fire, known as RWF029, was detected about five kilometres east of Highway 22 on Township Road 372. It grew to approximately 14 hectares and burned near the Clearwater River.
Thanks to quick reporting from the public, firefighters responded rapidly and the wildfire has since been extinguished.
Also on May 2, Sundre RCMP advised that crews were responding to a separate grass fire along Highway 587, east of James River Bridge. The road between Range Roads 43 and 45 was closed for a time but has since reopened.
Officials say that fire is now contained, with crews continuing to extinguish hot spots. Drivers are asked to remain cautious in the area.
Firefighters are also monitoring another wildfire, RWF005, located south of Nordegg. It is currently listed as under control, with resources ready to respond to any new starts.
Wildfire danger increases
The wildfire danger in the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area has been raised to very high from a high rating at the end of April.
Officials say warm temperatures and strong winds have left vegetation dry and highly flammable.
A fire advisory remains in effect for the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area and the Town of Rocky Mountain House. Safe campfires are permitted, but fire permit extensions may not be granted, and new permits are being issued only on a case-by-case basis for essential burning.
Tougher restrictions for Dovercourt Hall area
There is a more stringent fire restriction for the non-Forest Protection Area (FPA) area of Clearwater County — which is primarily east of Rocky Mountain House.
Under the restriction, safe wood campfires on private land are allowed, but burning of brush, yard debris and burn barrels are prohibited.
Wood campfires on public lands are also prohibited.
A Fire Advisory has also been issued for Lacombe County.
You can see a full list of active bans and restrictions can be found on Alberta Fire Bans.
