A Mountain View County man accused of walking near a school in Sundre with a loaded shotgun last year has now been sentenced following a trial in Didsbury Court of Justice.
Jason Kelly Burns, 34, was sentenced on July 8, 2026, to 15 days in jail, as well as 12 months of probation after his release, for a charge of threats causing bodily harm/death.
Meanwhile, a date has been set for trial in Calgary Court of Justice from Oct. 21-23, 2026, where he’ll face six other charges related to the same incident.
These charges include possession of a weapon dangerous to the public, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a controlled substance, two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, and trafficking a controlled substance.
It was on Sept. 26, 2025, at 7:28 a.m., when Sundre RCMP responded to a 911 call reporting a man with a 12-gauge shotgun in the vicinity of a school. As a precaution, area schools were placed in lockdown, and a shelter-in-place alert was issued to the community.
Officers from Sundre, Didsbury and Olds detachments, along with Police Dog Services, were called in to assist. A tip led RCMP to a residence on 4 Street, where police set up containment and attempted to locate the suspect.
At around 9:15 a.m., the suspect exited the home and surrendered to police without incident.
A search warrant was later executed at the residence, resulting in the seizure of four firearms stored in a safe, one unsecured loaded shotgun, drug trafficking paraphernalia and methamphetamine.
At the time, Burns was charged with assault, two counts of uttering threats, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.
