Environment Canada has issued a tornado warning for parts of west central Alberta, saying a severe thunderstorm producing a tornado is moving through the area.

Meteorologists say the dangerous storm is located near Leedale and is moving northeast at about 25 kilometres per hour.

Leedale is among the communities in the storm’s path.

The weather agency warns the storm is also capable of producing damaging winds, large hail and locally intense rainfall.

The warning is in effect for Clearwater County near Rocky Mountain House and Crimson Lake.

Environment Canada is urging residents to take cover immediately in a basement, interior room or sturdy shelter as the storm approaches. If no shelter is available, people are advised to lie in a low-lying area and protect their heads from flying debris.

Boaters are advised to return to shore and seek shelter if possible. If they cannot reach shore, they should move away from the tornado’s path, wear a lifejacket, lie face down and protect their head.

Environment Canada says tornado warnings are issued when a thunderstorm is producing or is likely to produce a tornado.

The agency is advising residents to continue monitoring forecasts and weather alerts as the situation develops. Severe weather can be reported by email to ABstorm@ec.gc.ca.
