Clearwater County council wants to ensure it has a seat at the table as the town of Rocky Mountain House moves ahead with plans for a new multiplex.

The county maintains several intermunicipal agreements with the town, meaning it could be responsible for contributing to the project’s costs.

“No matter what gets put in there, county residents are going to use it,” said Coun. Tyler McCauley, pointing to the existing Intermunicipal Collaboration Committee (ICC) agreement between the two municipalities.

Councillors noted that while the town has been actively advancing the multiplex project, only three members of county council sit on the ICC.

Although council initially discussed raising the project at a future ICC meeting, Deputy Reeve Drew McKay said that would not go far enough.

“The entire town council is very involved in this project — from what I’ve heard, it is a very expensive, elaborate, massive project,” McKay said, adding that an initiative of that magnitude should be a joint decision between the two municipalities.

Council approved a motion to schedule a workshop with Rocky Mountain House council to discuss the project and ensure both municipalities are on the same page.

Meanwhile, the town has continued moving the project forward, redirecting $200,000 previously budgeted for the design of a new town office building to multiplex planning.

Council also approved reallocating the town’s $50,000 share of a recreation centre expansion concept study to the multiplex initiative.

In addition, town council voted to ask Clearwater County to approve redirecting its matching $50,000 contribution to the multiplex concept. However, county council did not consider a motion on that request during its July 28 meeting.
