The wildfire danger in the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area is now rated high, although officials say conditions vary across the region.

Localized rainfall was recorded in northern portions of the forest area, while areas south of Highway 11 received little to no precipitation.

Warm, dry weather is expected to continue over the next several days, further drying vegetation and increasing the potential for new wildfires.

Officials are urging residents to use caution during outdoor activities and do their part to help prevent human-caused wildfires.

Wildfire response

With wildfire danger elevated in parts of the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area, Alberta Wildfire says it is taking proactive steps to ensure resources are ready to respond.

This includes strategically positioning wildfire crews throughout the forest area, maintaining aircraft for crew transport, aerial patrols and wildfire suppression, and ensuring airtankers are available when needed.

The public also plays an important role in wildfire preparedness. Officials encourage residents to recreate responsibly, follow safe burning practices and report any signs of smoke or wildfire by calling 310-FIRE (3473).

Fire advisory and restriction

A fire advisory remains in effect for most of the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area. Existing fire permits remain valid, although extensions may not be approved, and new permits will be issued only on a case-by-case basis for essential burning. Safe campfires are still allowed in advisory areas.

The advisory is also in effect for the town of Rocky Mountain House and the eastern portion of Clearwater County.

Meanwhile, a fire restriction remains in effect for southern portions of the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area, including parts of the Municipal District of Bighorn and Mountain View County within the Forest Protection Area. Under the restriction, all outdoor wood fires on public land, including random camping areas, are prohibited.

Residents are encouraged to check Alberta Fire Bans for current restrictions, advisory boundaries and information on permitted activities before lighting any outdoor fires.
