Alberta’s minister of Tourism and Sport, Andrew Boitchenko visited Rocky Mountain House and Clearwater County July 22-26, 2026.
During the tour, Boitchenko met with the town of Rocky Mountain House and Clearwater County councils, the Rocky Chamber of Commerce, Discover Rocky, Discover Nordegg and visited a diverse variety of operations.
Businesses welcomed the minister, and his assistant, to showcase their products and services while discussing the future of tourism as a community-led initiative.
Discover Rocky, a committee of the Rocky Chamber, was built to promote and advocate tourism. With signature events such as The Taste and Tour of Rocky and partnerships with operators and events they are leading local tourism collaboration, putting Rocky Mountain House on the map.
“We appreciated that the minister took time out of his busy schedule to come to the David Thompson region to see what we have to offer,” said Lana Madsen with Discover Rocky. “He listened to us and demonstrated that he was excited about our area and the present and future potential.”
Between April 1, 2022 and March 13, 2025 Travel Alberta invested $1.3 million in key projects to assist in supporting appropriately designed experiences and accommodations that create meaningful experiences for our neighbours and visitors.
Chamber officials say tourism drives economic development in our communities. They add that local businesses and service providers are impacted by operators from trades, suppliers to hospitality, logistic and retail partners, etc.
“It’s great to see the minister taking the time to visit our region,” said Nolan West, owner of Rival Trade Brewing. “It shows a genuine interest in what’s happening here and what makes this area special. It makes us, as tourism operators, feel heard, and gives us a chance to work together on ways we can keep improving and growing tourism in Rocky Mountain House, Clearwater County, and our beautiful David Thompson Country.”
Clearwater County and Rocky Mountain House attract visitors seeking open space, nature and authentic experiences. The outdoor focused demographic values sustainability, stewardship and long-term health of the region.
According to the Rocky Chamber, tourism supports the local business community in a very real way by helping sustain year-round employment and commerce. Officials point out that initial visits turn into second visits, which turns into campground bookings, meals and gas station stops. The goal is for visitors to stay longer and increase support of local businesses, resulting in economic growth.
“During my visit to the Rocky Mountain region, I had the opportunity to see firsthand the passion and dedication of the local businesses, tourism operators and community leaders who make this area such a strong destination,” said Minister Boitchenko. “Their work not only creates memorable experiences for visitors but also drives economic growth and supports local jobs. I encourage Albertans and visitors alike to explore the region, support its local businesses and discover everything it has to offer, from outdoor adventure to family-friendly attractions and unique local experiences.”
