Walkers and cyclists who frequent the Muskeg Avenue trail in Rocky Mountain House should see work in the area wrap up by October.
The $80,000 project, which began in spring 2026, saw the removal of aging poplar trees along the route, along with improvements to the path.
Crews still have some work to complete in the area, including root removal and spot spraying of poplar shoots that have sprung up over the summer, says town communications coordinator Laura Button.
Once all of the roots have been addressed, Button says crews will return to complete a landscape cleanup and seed the grass.
While the project saw the removal of decades-old poplar trees, the spruce, tamarack and memorial trees will remain, with officials noting the changes will allow those trees to mature more effectively.
While the trail remains fully open, Button says signs will be posted if paving work requires a temporary closure.
The Muskeg Ave. trail runs east-west near 67 Avenue, between 60 Street and Highway 11.

Other improvements around town
Muskeg Avenue isn’t the only part of town seeing some sprucing up.
A new vault toilet will be installed near the bike park by mid-September, says Button. The restroom facility will be located in the middle of the active district and will also serve users of the dog park, disc golf course and walking trails.
Town trails and the basketball park will also receive some patchwork over the next few weeks.
Weather is always a factor in completion dates, says Button, who adds signs will be posted in the event of a temporary closure to ensure the public doesn’t step onto fresh pavement.
