The Town of Rocky Mountain House is lobbying the Alberta government to have a roundabout installed at a busy intersection north of town.
The intersection of highways 11 and 22 is heavily used by industry and tourists, as well as rural residents commuting into Rocky Mountain House.
In its request, the town cites research showing an 82 per cent reduction in fatal and injury collisions when two-way stops are converted to roundabouts on rural, single-lane roadways.
The research cited by council also shows roundabouts result in a 44 per cent reduction in collisions overall.
The letter points to two recently built roundabouts along Highway 11, with more planned as part of the future twinning of the highway between Rocky Mountain House and Benalto.
Residents have long raised concerns about safety at the intersection. A 2024 petition launched by a county resident raised concerns about the dangerous left turn onto Highway 11 for southbound traffic heading into town.

At its Sept. 15 meeting, council voted to send a letter to MLA Jason Nixon and Devin Dreeshen, the minister of transportation and economic corridors, requesting a roundabout at the intersection of highways 11 and 22.
The letter is co-signed by Clearwater County and the Rocky Mountain House and District Chamber of Commerce.
