It was a tremendous weekend of volleyball as West Central High School’s junior varsity girls team brought home a championship from the Olds High School JV tournament Sept. 19.

The team won 11 of 13 sets on its way to the title, defeating Airdrie’s Bert Church High School in the final.

“I think the girls expected to be in the final. We have a very talented group of volleyball players in our building,” said West Central athletic director Justin Klein, who expects a similarly strong showing for the rest of the season.

Next up, the team will compete in a home tournament at West Central High School Sept. 25-26.

Klein says the public is welcome to come out and watch the action, with the first game for the girls at 4 p.m. Friday.

The team will also compete in another large tournament in October before heading into zones to wrap up the season.

Senior girls

West Central’s senior girls team also had a strong showing, taking second place at the Rocky Credit Union Rebels Cup hosted at West Central High School on Sept. 19.

The team was the runner-up, losing to Olds in the final.

Despite falling just short of the championship, Klein says the team played well in wins over Rimbey, Eckville and Olds Koinonia Christian School.

The senior girls will compete at the Olds tournament on Sept. 25-26.

The senior boys also had a strong showing, winning the consolation side at the Rebels Cup.

“They are playing really well for this early in the season for such a young team,” said Klein.

Upcoming athletics

The West Central High School Rebels football team will play its first home game of the season Sept. 22 against Rimbey.

Klein is inviting the community to come out for the game, with Rimbey ranked No. 1 in the province and West Central ranked third.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Curtis Field.
