A tough start to the Rocky Rams’ 2026-27 campaign continued over the weekend with a pair of lopsided losses in southern Alberta.
The team laced up Friday at the Kinplex Arena for a tilt with the Medicine Hat Cubs.
A second period marker from Rams forward Xzayden Beaverbones cut the Cubs’ lead down to three. However, Medicine Hat would score four more unanswered in the final 30 minutes of regulation.
The Cubs peppered Rams goalie Maddyn McCrindle with shots, as he stopped 42 of 50 shots.
Final score 8-1.
Saturday, the Rams faced the Copperheads at the ‘snake pit’ Coaldale Sportsplex.
Despite Rams forward Riley Roberts finding the net twice, it was otherwise all Coaldale.
McCrindle stopped 38 of 47 shots with Jett Wagner coming in relief midway through the third to stop seven of nine shots against.
Final score: 11-3.
The Rams, still looking for their first win of the season, are tied for last place in the HJHL’s North Division with the expansion Quality Rimbey Royals at 0-4.
Head coach Braden Bystrom says, in both games, the team’s roster was severely depleted due to injuries, suspensions and work and school commitments.
Even with the slow start, Bystrom says there are reasons to be optimistic about the young Rams crew.
“Off the ice, this group is very tight — I haven’t seen a group this tight in some time,” he says, adding the dressing room culture and character is positive.
Rams prepare for Oct. 9 home opener
Following a road-heavy schedule to open the regular season, Rams will be headed back to the Rocky Arena to play their home opener against the Red Deer Vipers. Puck drop 7:30 p.m.
Bystrom expects to have a full compliment roster that’s energized and ready to compete against a tough opponent in Red Deer.
“We’ll do whatever we can to slow [Red Deer] down,” he says. “We’re really excited for that Friday night opener.
The team also hosts the Strathmore Wheatland Kings Saturday Oct. 10 at the Rocky Arena. Game time 7:30 p.m.
