West Country Family Services is once again calling on the community to help spread some Christmas cheer through its annual Adopt-A-Senior program.
The initiative, which began during the COVID-19 pandemic, provides personalized gift baskets to seniors who could use some extra support during the holiday season.
Tami Brown, program coordinator with West Country Family Services, says the program has continued to grow since its early days, when the initial goal was to put together 50 baskets.
Last year, 70 baskets were delivered, and the organization is hoping to prepare at least 75 this year.
Brown says the program is entirely funded through community donations, with baskets tailored to the individual needs of each recipient.
Items can include everything from socks, gloves and toques to books, toiletries, Christmas decorations, food items and gift cards. The average basket is valued at close to $100.
Brown says West Country Family Services supports at least 300 clients each month through its programs and has a good understanding of who could benefit from a little extra help.
She adds that the organization also welcomes referrals from community members who know of a senior who could use some holiday cheer.
Donations can be dropped off at the West Country Family Services office on Main Street. Non-perishable items are welcome during regular office hours.
The goal is to have the baskets delivered before Christmas, although Brown says deliveries have occasionally continued right up to Christmas Eve.
She credits the community’s continued generosity for the program’s growth and encourages anyone interested in contributing to get involved.
