As Albertans prepare to hit the road for the Heritage Day long weekend, RCMP are reminding drivers to keep safety top of mind.
Mounties say a few key precautions can go a long way in preventing serious or fatal collisions during one of the busiest travel weekends of the summer.
“Many collisions are preventable,” said Sgt. Darrin Turnbull with Alberta RCMP Traffic. “By following safe driving practices, such as leaving early, staying alert, and driving according to conditions, we can help ensure Alberta’s roadways are safe for everyone this August long weekend.”
RCMP are urging drivers to avoid all forms of impairment, including alcohol and drugs, which they say can significantly affect judgment, coordination and reaction time. They also warn against distracted driving—whether it’s using a phone, adjusting a GPS, or tending to passengers or pets.
Officers are also reminding drivers to wear seatbelts, respect posted speed limits, and be cautious of increased summer traffic, including cyclists, pedestrians, and off-highway vehicles.
Motorists are encouraged to share their travel plans with family or friends, including their route and estimated arrival time.
The RCMP will have a visible presence on Alberta highways throughout the weekend.
