A water main break has closed part of 49 Street in downtown Rocky Mountain House.
According to town officials, the road will be closed June 30 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. while crews repair the break.
Pedestrian access is available on the west side of the street only.
The break — located right outside the 94.5 Rewind Radio studios — has prompted detours in the area and residents are advised to plan for delays and use an alternate route.
Once water service has been restored, the town advises affected residents and businesses in the area to flush all toilets and run their taps for three to five minutes to purge any air that may be trapped in their water lines.
The affected block of 49 St is on the town’s approved capital project list for 2026, which includes $1.8 million for water, sewer, sidewalks and pavement.
The project tender was awarded to Pidherney’s Inc, with town officials saying the work is tentatively booked for August and September of this year.
Officials add, it was not possible to simply isolate the June 30 break and wait until the project began in late summer, as there are too many businesses affected.
Waiting until major work starts up in a couple months was not considered, as the town notes it will be faster and less costly to do an emergency repair today rather than provide temporary water service to all properties.
The original watermains were installed in 1955, and sewer mains in 1969.
Town addresses chronic water main breaks in southwest
Earlier in June, Rocky Mountain House approved $450,000 in expedited water main repairs near Hwy. 752 after two recent failures cost the town $85,000 in unexpected repairs.
The water main in the Old Town area, built in 1981, was originally scheduled for replacement in 2027 as part of the town’s 10-year capital plan.
