Though the Rocky Rams are still searching for that elusive first win of the season, the team came close twice over the Oct. 16-17 weekend.
Following two lopsided losses the weekend before, the Rams were hungry for a win as they descended on the Ron Ebbesen Arena for a game against the Airdrie Techmation Thunder Friday night.
Riley Roberts and Nick Campeau scored for the Rams in the first frame ending the period in a 2-2 tie. The Thunder began the second with two quick goals to take a lead they never relinquished. Final score: 6-4 Airdrie.
The next night, the Rams returned to the Rocky Arena to face division rivals Sylvan Lake Wranglers.
The Wranglers jumped out to a 3-0 lead to end the first period before the Rams began a would-be comeback at the start of the second.
Caleb Hilman and Bracken Hilman each contributed a second period goal while Rams forward Riley Roberts got the game tying marker at 4:38 of the third period.
A tough ending for Rams faithful as Sylvan Lake right winger Karson Ledieu found the OT winner just 20 seconds into the extra frame.
Sylvan Lake’s Ryder Cyrenne made 17 saves on 20 shots for the win. Rocky’s Maddyn McCrindle was tested with 50 shots, stopping 46, in the overtime loss.
Final score: 4-3 Sylvan Lake.
The Rams pick up a point in the OT loss putting their record at 0-7-1, good enough for fifth in the HJHL’s north division — one point ahead of the Quality Rimbey Royals who are 0-9.
Rams continue home stand Oct. 23
The Rams are getting set to continue a three-game home stand when they host the Mountain View Colts at the Rocky Arena.
It’ll be a tall order for the Rams as the undefeated Colts sit in the top spot of the HJHL’s North Division with an 8-0 record.
Game time 7:30 p.m.
The Rams will wrap up the home stand Saturday with an 8 p.m. game against Rimbey.
