Rocco The Rocky Mountain Rock Snake will be disappearing for the winter months – but no fear, for Town of Rocky Mountain House officials say it shall return.
For logistical reasons such as snow plowing equipment, officials say it is not possible to keep the snake in place during the winter.
However, the rocks have been packed up, and are set to appear again in spring 2025.
It’s become extremely popular with town residents, says Laura Button, communications coordinator with the town of Rocky Mountain House.
A sign near Rocco’s head reads: “Rocky Mountain Snake. Add a rock to see how far I travel, but please don’t take away.”
Button says the snake grew to over 100 meters long with a volunteer counting 907 stones.
All 907 stones have been packed up for the winter, says Button, and when it returns, it may not be in the same location.
“Were not quite sure where Rocco will bask in the sun just yet,” says Button.

The mysterious art installation first appeared on a walking trail near Strawberry Hill on the north end of town in spring 2024.
Button adds, the origins of the rock snake remains a mystery, as the identity of those who started it remains unknown.
Since then, rocks have been added from school groups, community events, and individuals.
