Clearwater County council has approved an updated site plan for the Leslieville Community Feature — and it comes with a bonus.
The revised plan includes a larger gazebo than originally proposed, thanks to a suggestion from Councillor Genny Mehlhaff. She recommended expanding the gazebo to cover nearly the entire concrete pad, noting the additional size would better serve the space and still fit within the existing budget.
The upgraded proposed structure replaces the smaller version previously planned.

The community feature will also include a fenced playground, picnic tables, benches, and an outhouse. The playground will be enclosed with a chain link fence, with a single small opening designed to help keep children safe.
The project began after the construction of the new David Thompson High School, which led to the removal of the previous nearby playground. Clearwater County held public engagement sessions to determine what amenities were most needed, eventually identifying the need for a smaller children’s playground with safe access.
The vision for the area is to become a central gathering space for residents. A “hamlet centre” where people of all ages can meet, relax, and enjoy the outdoors— even hold jam sessions.
Public input included a survey distributed to over 120 residents and business owners, along with a QR code sign at the 2024 Leslieville Block Party. Only six responses were received, but suggestions ranged widely — from walking trails and a dog park to a splash pad, fire pit, and more shaded areas.
With council’s endorsement of the updated site plan, construction will move forward with the larger gazebo, as well as the remaining planned features. The county aims to finish the project in 2025.
