Construction is now underway on a major infrastructure rehabilitation project in downtown Rocky Mountain House, with part of 49 Street closed to traffic for the next three months.
The town of Rocky Mountain House says 49 Street between 48 and 49 avenues — right in front of the 94.5 Rewind Radio studios — will be closed to through traffic as crews begin replacing aging underground utilities and rebuilding the roadway.
The project is expected to be completed in October, weather and construction conditions permitting.
Work includes replacing water mains and sanitary sewer mains, reconstructing sidewalks and paving the road with two new lifts of asphalt.
Town officials say the infrastructure in the area is among the oldest in the community. The aging water and sewer lines are smaller than current engineering standards and have become increasingly prone to failures and service disruptions.
The project follows a water main break on June 30 that forced the same block of 49 Street to close for emergency repairs. Town officials said the affected water main dated back to 1955, while the sanitary sewer main was installed in 1969.
While the project was on the town’s approved capital project list for 2026, officials said emergency repairs could not wait for the planned late summer construction because too many businesses relied on the line for water service.
Town officials acknowledge the work will create short-term disruptions for nearby businesses, residents and motorists but say replacing the aging infrastructure before additional failures occur will reduce the risk of costly emergency repairs and improve long-term service reliability.
