A popular local art installation is set to return to the trails near Strawberry Hill as Rocco the Rock Snake emerges from hibernation.
Laura Button, communications coordinator with the Town of Rocky Mountain House, says Rocco will return to the walking trails as early as Tuesday, May 13. Public works staff will begin preparing the site in the coming days, and community volunteers are invited to help reassemble the 100-metre-long serpent.
“There’s been quite a bit of interest on social media and in person,” Button said. “We’ve heard from people wondering when Rocco is going to make his appearance.”
Originally made up of more than 900 painted stones laid out by community members, Rocco was removed and stored last fall due to winter snow-clearing requirements. This spring, Button says the snake will return to the same general area near Strawberry Hill.

Volunteers are encouraged to join the effort starting at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.
“Many hands make light work,” said Button, adding that some of the painted stones show signs of wear. “If people want to add to Rocco this year, it might be a good idea to put a sealant on your artwork to keep it vibrant and permanent.”
Rocco’s origin remains a mystery, but Button says it quickly became a hit with residents, school groups and local events, growing steadily in size since it first appeared in spring 2024. A sign at the site reads: “Rocky Mountain Snake. Add a rock to see how far I travel, but please don’t take away.”
